In my heart forever...

« on: August 22, 2007, 04:19:06 PM »

The companies are trying to reinvent their images and products since the recalls.  What NEW NAMES of CAT FOOD have emerged since March 2007?  Let's list the name of the food, brand name, and actual name of the manufacturer.   We can help one another fill in any missing information such as "DBA" (doing business as).  Some companies may have even established an off-shoot of the present company under a new name.  TIA for your contributions.

Buy local.  Buy organic.
If you ate today, thank a farmer, hopefully a small, local farmer.

Remember the thousands & thousands of pets that died to give US a wake-up call about the safety of ALL food and products.

Just saw a new shelf of cat food at my local supermarket:  Disney Aristocats is the label.  There were a number of flavors!

I haven't seen reviews or comments on this food--anyone know anything?
The label says Made in USA.

But do we know if that means that the ingredients are also made in the USA?

(Sorry, but my skeptic font is in constant use these days....)
Thanks...

Anne M:

I believe that for a product to hold the made in the USA tag, something like 99% of what is in has to originate in the USA. But don't hold me to that.

Anne, Did you get a look at the ingredients?  I'm curious, as always.

I did some googling looking for this cat food, Aristocat.  I found references to 2006.  They also were supposed to sell an Old Yeller dog food through Kroger.  I cannot find an ingredient list anywhere.

nne & Justme- My brother was buying that cat food at Krogers in Midlothian,Va. When he tried to get it 2 weeks ago there was none. The store manager said they were only carrying it til new batchs of the pulled foods came out. Said they weren't going to keep ordering it because it was too expensive. Makes me wonder;is that the real reason or another silent recall ?When he had been there 2 wks earlier the shelf was full of it.That store wasn't too good about pulling the recalled products either. Doug said he warned people in there several times that what they were buying had been recalled. He notified the manager also.

Thank you All for your posts:

--RE ingredients:  I did scan several of the cans in the store (hard to do without a microscope!  Can they print those labels any smaller?)  Can't really evaluate, so was looking for a website with posted ingredient list.  Still can't find that.

And there are a million flavors of the canned!  Or, about a dozen anyway.  (Its presentation seems like it wants to challenge FF.)

--RE price, etc:  At my Ralphs, it's now 49cents a can.  FF is 73 cents, fyi!

--They also have other Disney pet products, including Aristocats litter and Old Yeller dog food (with that inexcusable label!! IMO of course)  Lesliek--don't know why that Kroger stopped carrying it, but  it just launched out here in CA...with a full product line.

By the way, there is now another new cat food, PETITE CUISINE, which offers 4 new flavors, all fish.  However, that one looks better on the ingredient list....and they have a website.  I'm going to investigate that as well.

Thanks for all the notes!  Hope we can keep each other posted.... Undecided

I have taken to carrying a magnifying glass with me to the store in case my trifocals fail me.   Grin

We've all seen so many new cat food formulations advertised on TV - Iams with their recycled-bag-look (oh, so wholesome), Fancy Feast has a new dry flavor, Meow Mix, etc., I can't think of the rest now.  It's just such a shame that they (PFI) would take this route of advertising 'new and improved' instead of taking steps to assure us that the food they make is safe for our family.  F*** their magic show.

Eric V - When the recalls began, I switched everyone to Natural Balance because I felt all warm and fuzzy about the American flag with the words 'Made In The USA'.  I bought two of each of every flavor and did tasting menus one weekend.  We come to find that 'made' only means assembled in the U.S. with cheap, unregulated materials from wherever.

I saw Aristocat at Kroger and have also been trying to find info on the web--no luck.   I, too, could not read the labels as I didn't have my glasses!!! It's tough getting old!!!

I just contacted Kroger Customer Service.  Was told Aristocat canned made by "Embassy International."  Said any other info is "proprietary."  Would not tell me if made in US or outside.  Tried to find this company--no luck yet.

I'm glad we all have a magnifying glass a la Sherlock Holmes, we're gonna need it!!

I've tried tracing this food through the Embassy Internatl. link as well as through Disney corporate, and just can't find any information.     Huh   I'll be happy to follow up with other research ideas but have hit a blank wall for now.  I'll see if I can find a phone number on the label.

After recent events, pet food companies surely realize that consumers need and want to know accurate information about the companies that make food for their animal family members?Huh

I'll try writing Disney with that point--if I can't find you to contact you, I certainly won't be buying your food for my cat!!

In God we Trust, all others be prepared to document your ingredient label!  Wink

Are you sure you saw this stuff??

There is absolutely no information I can find anywhere on it??

Maybe it was a special run for a limited time or something like that.

All I can find on Embassy Intl is a furniture importer??

This is a real mystery, wonder what the hell is in it??

I used to think that anyone doing anything weird was weird. I suddenly realized that anyone doing anything weird wasn't weird at all and it was the people saying they were weird that were weird.

DB--

Maybe I did imagine it!  (It's 106 in LA these days, I could have seen a vision at my local Ralph's......but it would probably have been a frosty cold beverage, not a can of Sardines and Mackerel cat food.....)

However, I think Aristocats is for real.  I'll see if I can buy a can and transcribe the ingredients for discussion.

This week I'll also try calling Disney consumer products and see what they tell me.  I know Disney has wanted to get into the pet product industry for a  long time and their marketing folks are super-savvy.  The lack of info is worrying.

No surrender!!  Now it's a challenge.  Especially since lots of folks trust the Disney name......which is what they're counting on, of course.

PS  Please excuse all those previous smileys.  I didn't put them there, I guess they jumped on board by themselves.....
