That is really a pity, and it is funny since here most available foods (or at least japanese and european ones) are in jelly. There are even some cheap thailand supermarket foods which are in aspic, for Fancy Feast (sold here under name Mon Petit) there are some seafood flavors in jelly but not many. Good thing about those foods in jelly is that you can see it is real fish.

Just wonder why, can't be really the cost issue of gelatin or other gelling agents since I've seen much cheaper foods in jelly/aspic than Fancy Feast. That made in thailand supermarket brand, a big can of sardines in aspic (more than twice the size of FF cans) is something like 0.3-0.4 US$, and it is really big pieces of sardines in jelly.

oh - I didn't know that.  I automatically thought aspic was expensive becuase the last time I bought gelatin for my cats' food, the box cost me nearly $10.00!

Well, gelatin as found in the baking/desserts section is expensive, which is a pet peeve of mine (all cake making/decorating stuff is ridulously expensive, and there are often much cheaper alternatives that work just as well).

However, you don't need gelatin to get "jelly" for cat food, you just need some parts with lots of connective tissue, boil it for a long time and it will gel when it cools down (for example, chicken feet, chicken necks, pigs ears etc.). That would be much cheaper and probably more nutritious as well.

I checked briefly at the store today and it appears they no longer have the Tuna and Ocean Fish Feast in Aspic flavor; I'm sure the company quit making it since no one could find it. It had zero carbs according to the Janet and Binky charts, sorry to see it go.

I have a confession to make, my 2 kitties ate 3 cans of FF Savory Salmon over the weekend they ate it with such GUSTO I feel guilty for the year I have kept them from canned cat food.  SIGH. My cats are crack addicts too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However that was left over from pre pet food crisis.  EXP AUG 08.  Still will not touch the FF EM have like 20 cans.  ICK.

anyway off tonight to buy some Wellness canned and some Solid Gold canned.  Fingercrossed that they will eat Wellness.  My 2 prefer fishy flavors over turkey and chicken so we will see, they never make anything simple.  That is why I am buying some Solid Gold Tuna I know they love it.

I will try not to vomit while I purchase the cans went to buy it on Friday after work and chickened out.  UGH

Lorie -
I know FF get a bad rap, but I've had no problems with it and so I just stick with it.  If your kitties like it, maybe it could be included in their rotation.  I would stay away from the Elegant Medleys, though, and just stick with the non-gluten varieties.  I never use the EM's.  It might be a good idea to try to interest them in some of the other meats because I'm not sure they should eat just fish.  Good luck in your search for something that works!
By the way, Mandy had her annual check-up last week with a full Senior panel of blood work and all was normal.  So, I am happy.  She is 14 years old, and (knock on wood) has no chronic medical problems.   Smiley

My elderly kitty will only eat Fancy Feast Gourmet Chicken (no glutens).

A very interesting note is that in my area, our FF comes from plant #1160 and #1162. She will hardly eat the FF that comes from #1160 and gobbles up the food from #1162.

I don't think it has anything to do with the ingredients, but the FF from #1162 is smoother and more of a pate whereas the FF from #1160 is chunkier.

I have to drive around town to find the FF Gourmet Chicken from #1162. She's a much happier cat when I can find it.

Just an observation...

For those that are feeding Fancy Feast, I was wondering if anyone has noticed any difference in the Gourmet Chicken Feast flavor?  We just bought some new cans and the date is June 2010 and its from plant 1162.  The color is waaaay darker than normal in our cans and alot thicker and chunkier than normal and Sophers is not eating it very well and doing the scratchy-scratchy cover-up motions....... Undecided

I thought I'd got my two older CRF cats off FF and converted to Wellness but that fizzled out and they wouldn't touch it. After that, they ate EVO chicken for a week or so, then wouldn't touch that either. My 18 year old guy was getting to be skin and bones.

Last weekend, I'd run out of everything, so made a quick trip to the local variety and picked up FF Beef and FF Seafood pate. Man, you should have seen those two cats EAT! The old guy has actually packed on some weight and has a lot more energy.

This week, even the little dog is turning up his nose at Wellness. What's going on with that?

Okay, since Sassy isn't eating the Wellness cans very enthusiastically, I stopped to find some gluten-free FF. Can anyone help me with names, colors, etc of what I'm supposed to be looking for? The store said they have no grain-free (same as gluten free?) and I called the other stores in the area and they have no grain-free. I did bring home a can of Merricks and she loved that!
I know that FF is not the best quality, but I have to get this cat eating enough for herself and five kittens. Thought FF might be a good option since most cats seem to love it.
So, if anyone can give me a list of gluten-free flavors, etc to look for I would appreciate it. Hate to do it, but I have to do something. I DO NOT want to bottle feed five kittens for two weeks!! They need to eat which means Sassy needs to eat!

Shibadiva, I'm glad that your seniors are eating enthusiastically again. Not eating scares me to death, since that's how CJ handles sickness and we ended up with liver problems and feeding tubes.

Thanks for whatever help anyone would care to give me.

Shiba, on the Wellness, in case you haven't seen these, you might want to look at:

catmom, just a thought. Have you tried the Wellness kitten canned grain free?  When my two seniors refused the regular Wellness canned earlier this year (lack of appetite, not due to the food itself), they dove right into the kitten canned.  Plus it has higher calories which may be a plus with a nursing mama.  I have my two new kittens on it and they are doing marvelous.

Also, Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance is recommended by breeders for lactating queens, both the canned and the dry (and for kittens, too).

Good luck, there's nothing scarier than a kitty not eating.

catmom-many, I remember a list of gluten-free FF varieties here somewhere last year.  I'll poke around a bit and see if I can find it.

Agree about Wellness kitten.

I found one list of gluten-free FF flavors.  See reply #5; it's a long post and the list is at the bottom of it:

catmom, Sophers eats the Turkey FF and that has a olive-green & white label, she eats the Gourmet Chicken Feast and that is a pinkish & white label and the Chicken and Liver and that is a goldish or light brown & white looking label.  She also eats the beef and that has a brown and white label.  None of them have glutens or grains.  I just also bought some Savory Salmon feast and that has and orange & white label, Cod,Sole & Shrimp and that has a turquoise green & white label and Tender Beef & Chciken Feast and that has an orangey-red & white label.  Those also dont have glutens or grains.....they do have by-products.  Undecided Hope that helps you!
