I started feeding my cats the Orijen Cat and Kitten dry food and they really enjoyed it a lot.  I was very relieved that I had finally found something for them that had good, wholesome ingredients. (I think)

Unfortunately, the last bag I bought, and I buy 15 lb bags,  when I picked it up from my petfood store, and started the drive home, suddenly I realized that my car was smelling very strange, a sort of nauseatingly sweet smell.  I pulled over and smelled around and it was the bag of Orijen cat food!!  I took it back to the man and he kindly took it back and gave me a refund, tho he said he smelled nothing at all.  I don't know how he could have not smelled it, it was a very strong smell, it stunk up my car!!  but noses are noses.
I came home and ordered another bag from chewy.com.  Hoping it would smell better and (I paid more).
when it arrived, unfortunately IT SMELLED THE SAME nauseating sweet smell!
So I called the company and the woman said, "Our bags do NOT smell."   I said I knew that, and that is why I was calling and why I had returned the first bag, but now I had a 2nd stinky bag and feared whatever the source of the smell was, it might have penetrated and been absorbed by the food itself.  She repeated that their bags  never smelled, and that if I thought it did, it could not have  been absorbed by the food anyway since the lining of the bags is some sort of aluminum or other metal, forget exactly which metal she said.   She took the batch number,  went to check and came back and said they had had no complaints at all about that batch number, and that she would feed it to her cats.  Good for YOUR cats I thought.

Well, I did NOT feed it to my cats, because since losing my 3 cats back in 2007,  I am quite paranoid about cat food.  I thought I would call Chewy and try to return it, and in the meantime feed something else.

Well, then everything under the sun started happening.  I almost collapsed in the kitchen, followed by doctor visits Plural, and many days of not feeling well enough to do anything at all, and then another doctor visit, and he stopped my meds etc. so I was preoccupied with all that, and constantly taking my bp to see what was going on without any meds, and then to top it all off we had our Jonas, snow storm hit us.  so the box from Chewy is still sitting here and I have not yet called them, I have been busy digging out my arborvitae trees, giving meds to cats and lying down resting when I had time.

QUESTION:  Has anyone that buys Orijen, noticed this nauseatingly sweet smell on the bags!??
I have been asking myself if perhaps all the bags all smell like this, coming off the assembly line because of the plastic layer on the outside of their "strange" bags, and perhaps by the time it usually gets to the store it has worn off, and so I have never smelled it before.
When you buy the bags, they have had all the air sucked out of them to help preserve the food, and when you first open the bag, it sort of whooshes as the air all floods out. So they are an interesting sort of bag in any case.

Am I being too paranoid,  yes, the darned Chewy bag  did NOT smell any longer the last time I opened the box and smelled it, the smell has worn off.    Am I being overly cautious, and would you use the food, or still try and return it to Chewy??  They are excellent and probably would take it back.  My poor cats have not had their beloved Orijen from before the snow storm now.  The store didn't get another order in, tomorrow hopefully they will.
I did go back and buy another 5 lb bag for them last week because it is in a different kind of bag. and it didn't smell.  But since then they have been deprived, (with this 15 lb bag sitting here.)
It seems everyone loves this food, it is flying off the shelves, and I had to ask them to hold a bag for me because I have my dr appointment tomorrow and will be late getting home.

What would you do?  I can get more tomorrow, but would you try and send this Chewy bag back or use it.
After all, I suppose it is possible that all the bags smell this way when they come off the assembly line, and it wears off before reaching the store, BUT...on.TWO of them did not wear off and 2 of them still stunk!!

Any opinions, and am I being paranoid.  I just have had too many things going wrong lately, and don't want to risk my cats health if it is really suspicious and not my imagination.    Thank you in advance.  And my cats will appreciate your help.

Antifreeze smells sweet , maybe a delivery truck or distributors truck had a leak ? I would not feed it even if the bags are made with a metal lining ! I don't take chances anymore . Just return it & tell them why . I just tossed 2 cans of Newmans own with hard white stuff on the top edges of the food . They did not respond to my attempt to contact them . Had a can of daves with white on top , they took all the info to check into it & sent me replacements . I will buy Dave's again but won't buy Newman's . I have to say after the non answer you got I wouldn't buy Orijen either .

Leslie,  thank you for not making me feel like I am crazy!!   Yes, I do think Orijen gave me a NON-answer.

I just got a new bag, which I had been waiting for, (bought it before I read your answer here)  and I smelled it and the lady smelled it, and it seemed ok, so I bought it.  Just before I opened it, I decided to check it and make sure it wasn't the same batch as the stinky one, which was over a week ago.  So I checked the bar codes and YES it had the SAME bar code as the stinky one!!!
Sooo, I did not open it.
Question:  Is the bar code the same number that would indicate which BATCH the food is??

BW,
No, the bar code is a number that indicates what the product is.  Any date on the bag that indicates expiration or use by date will be somewhere else on the bag usually. There could also be another number that indicates the batch or that could be incorporated with the date.  The bar code is what stores scan to know what the product is and how much it costs.  So, if this is the same product you had previously, it would have the same bar code.  If it doesn't smell, it is probably fine to use.

Mandy,
Thank you so much. I will look for the other number and date somewhere.
I am probably being overly cautious about this new bag.  I have had so much going on with my health, that I am getting screwy!!  With all the fluctuations in my bp, last night for a while the diastolic was 52 again (too close to the 40's for comfort IMO, so it upset me)  and this morning while still in bed, it was 165/82  for heavens sake!!  After a half cup coffee it came down to 141/67 eventually.  So it is now fluctuating, which is even scarier.    The doctor said to tell him next appointment how many times exactly I had found it necessary to take a tekturna, and I wondered why he said that since it was so low, but now I see why, if it is going to shoot up like that unexpectedly.

Sooo, again, thank you so much for the info re the batch number and I will look on the bag for the best by date etc.  I would certainly like to be able to give it to them.
