I have not written on this forums since the terrible food crisis last year but I had to tell you guys this.
I only feed my cats Chicken soup for the cat lover's soul adult canned and dry but the cans marked best by 2/19/10 are not good.  I am not sure what is going on but they smell different and look different than before.  First I thought maybe because they were so new but now I know something is wrong. One can i opened was grey and black in color, i threw that one out asap.  I thought maybe it is was a bad can but tonite I opened a can and there was a huge piece of something white.  I grabbed food and threw it out. I have contacted Chicken soup but i had to see if others have noticed this. I have 11 cans left.  I am scared to death. I dont know what else to do but I felt I should at least see if anyone here has that issue or maybe it is just one bad case, I dont know.

Help me

Thanks for being in touch. Most of us here have bad experiences with food so we understand your concern and horror.

First of all, do not feed this to your cat. And please document what you are seeing ~ photographs, saving food unopened so that it might be tested in the future if necessary.

I'm sure that others will be along with some thoughts. I hope your cats are not sick.

I agree with everything catmom5 said.  It would also be a good idea to make note of the numbers on the bottom of the cans that were bad, saving the cans if you still have them.  And save any sales receipts from your purchase.  Hopefully there will not be a problem, but just in case.

I don't know if they have had a formula change that would account for a different look and smell.  It would be worth asking that when you talk with the company.

I hope that your cats are well.  Good thing that you noticed the difference before you fed the food!

I use the dry food of this brand, along with other foods, but not the canned.  I've been very satisfied with the dry.

I can understand that this would be a scary experience!  Did your cats actually eat any of the food that appeared to be bad?  If so, how long ago?  Did you feed any other cans with the same date  How old are the cats?

Things to watch for are vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drinking, weakness, excessive urinating, sleeping or lying still more than usual.  Any of these would be reason to visit the vet tomorrow.  These problems can be caused by many things other than bad food, they are just signs of a sick cat who may need treatment.

This sounds like the type of problem caused by bad food processing, not necessarily by unknown contamination.

I agree with the above advice and would also go get the can out of the trash. Put it in a sealed ziploc bag and freeze it. That way if your cats become ill,you have it for testing. Don't return all the unopened cans either, save some for possible testing needs. It does sound like a problem with a batch of food or a canning problem, but that doesn't mean the cats won't get sick if they ate any of it.

Ok I am calmer now.  First I did feed them some cans I am not sure exactly.  I will be watching them all night.  I have not seen any signs that either are sick.  I have 11 cans unopened, I have the receipt and have notified the place where I bought this case. I will go outside and dig out that can with the white thing in it and the other can I threw out just because it looked odd as well. I never use dented cans and i noticed as i was couting the ones I have that many are dented.  No can has exploded or opened though and I would noticed the smell by now if one had.  My best quess is maybe I have feed them 7 cans.  I will call my vet asap in morning and just watch them like a hawk tonite.  I dont look forward to putting that bad can in the freezer but I will. I would not send all the cans to the Mfg, I am keeping some and I will probably need to send them out for testing.  I remember seeing a place to send them in these forums but it was a long time ago. I will take pictures of the cans I have in the trash as well. Thank you so much for your advice.

Thank you

Sometimes a case of food will have some cans from one lot and some from another.  So it could be that the cans you already fed them were fine.  You probably would have noticed any big difference before you fed the food, since you noticed this.  Since there were some dented cans, this sounds even more like a production or handling problem, which is usually not widespread, thankfully.

I'm guessing that due to your watchfulness, the cats will be fine.  But let us know how they do, please!

Notifying your state Ag department might be a good first step in getting the food checked out.

Sending good wishes for your cats and for you!

Starry- If your state Ag Dept doesn't test, your vet may be able to get it done also.

I am very glad to hear that the cats are looking well and will probably be fine!  What a relief.

If you do find out what was wrong with the food, please let us all know.
