Below is the text of an email I sent to Merrick, who produces BG cat food, on January 2, 2012.  They asked for the "best by date and lot number" on the can bottom.  Next they asked for my address to send a mailer so I could return to them 4 cans that I didn't throw away.  No mailer sent.....no further communication from them.  Either they lost interest or they did not want to incur any liability.  Merrick is certainly off my list.  This is a caution if you purchase cat food from this company.  Hello Merrick Company,

The photo below shows just one issue contained in a case of BG quail and chicken cat food I received about 4 weeks ago from PetFood direct. I contacted PetFood Direct for a refund of the case of cat food because after using 4 of the cans, the 5th and 6th can had a chocolate brown gravy-like layer on the top, which smelled rancid. Today I was opening the cans to toss the cat food and recycle the cans (not wanting to chance making my animals sick from feeding this food) I found this can covered with mold.
I am just stunned!!   I've been purchasing canned cat food for 30 years and have never gotten a can with rancid or moldy food. Something is very wrong with your food processing for the food to be so compromised. The expiration date on the can bottom is May 2013.

Welcome to you!  If you would like to post a copy of the photo you sent the company, please feel free to do so.  If you need help with doing that, please let catbird, JustMe or myself know.

We have quite a bit of material on the company which you can find by doing a Merrick search.  I used to buy their dog treats but haven't done so for years, based on the information found and posted here.

Thanks for posting this photo (and welcome!) Buddys Mom.  This kind of mold pattern is sometimes caused by failure of the can seal along the place where the pull-off lid joins the main can.  I'd say either Merrick's canner got a bad batch of cans, or the cans were horribly mishandled somewhere along the line--although I don't see any dents, which you'd think would be the case if it were the latter.  The ones with the sludge sound really disgusting!

I agree that the lack of interest in further investigating your problem report is a good reason to cross the company off your list.

Bddy's Mom, thanks for posting about this.  That is totally awful looking and even worse, is the company's lack of response.  You could always call the FDA rep for your state and report it, seeing how the company isnt interested.  Perhaps FDA might want to make a visit to check out their canning facility...sort of like they did with Evangers when they found several problems.  This link gives the phone number for each state:

That truly is alarming.  Thanks for posting.  It also reminds me to be careful to check my other cans (other brands) just to be extra safe.

Thank you Sandi K for suggesting a contact to the FDA.  I will do that.
The experience with Merrick reminds me again how much we don't know about what is in the pet food we buy.  I'm not certain whether any of the companies can be trusted.
I'm seriously considering again making my own.  With 7 cats, I may need to hire some part-time help!   Smiley

Welcome Buddys Mom ! Thank you for the warning too , I don't buy food from pfc's that respond this way. I agree with Sandi, definitely contact the FDA & your states agriculture dept. Some states have feed regulations, & even if yours doesn't they will take a complaint & start a file. If they get several, they will also contact the FDA. I'm glad your kitties are ok & home cooking is not that hard. Its more a matter of what tastes & textures they prefer. If starting to prep food at home, consider serving some raw too.

Looks like these were exp. date May 2013, but the poster has not given specific lot info beyond that, so far.

Hello Buddy's Mom &  furriends,  Shocked
This is just so horrible to see! I check every single can of food for my girl, not taking any chances. Who can we trust?Angry
I have some BG small cans & I'm gonna go & take them out from Kally's food pile & not feed them to her.

She does not like the Chicken & Quail formula at all!

Buddy's Mom, I'm so very sorry that you had to endure this discovery at its worse. I pray that your litta one will not be affected by any of the previous BG products.

Please let us know how everything is going for you, we are all concerned!

Luvs,
Kally Kat & her Mom Liz

Back in January (2012) there was a post about moldy Merrick cat food.  I opened a can of California Roll today that had the same ugly, green-and-white stuff growing in it.  I advise extreme caution for anyone considering buying this cat food.

Hi all, just joined after reading about Merrick. Over a year ago I complained to whoever I could get to listen about the lids on the BG cans leaking....in my case it was the tuna.....uggh!! The first time it happened was at home in a bag with other cans. I could barely see a tiny indentation in the lid top, took it back to Petco, thought it was just a fluke. They replaced the can, I walked out to my car, opened the bag.....it leaked again....in a matter of minutes!!!! I walked back in and spoke with the manager, asked for my money back, would Never buy it again. I was told by a holistic pet food store owner that there were only 4 places that do the canned food, I haven't been able to confirm that info. but the lids Obviously Don't Seal Securely and mold and bacteria can get in. What do you have to do to get action on this problem? YIKES!!!
