Some of the canned salmon is wild caught Alaskan & no ties to China. Just have to check what is available near you. Remember to check all frozen also, some wild caught Alaskan is frozen & packaged in China. Along with other seafood & meats.

The cats had the quail flavor again this AM, and there was much less enthusiasm. Even the one who devoured it last time ate only about half of hers.

Am using the kibble as a supplement, snack. 2 paws up (Baby Girl really hates to change kibble, but this is better for her - however, since she gobbles up her wet food - I'm not too worried if she doesn't eat the supplement).
2 of 3 paws up.

I had bought 9 cans of Before Grain - both chicken and turkey - over a month ago, and the first feeding (chicken) was not well received by my three. Ok, so I tried again a couple of days ago - turkey this time. All three walked away! Even though I have given away our less popular flavors to a cat shelter before, this time I didn't think those cats would want the stuff either. The pet food store took the remaining cans back. I don't think there is anything wrong with the food, it apparently just doesn't smell or taste appealing enough. Meowli

Hi all, I am so glad to see this post since there is not too many comments/reviews on the internet for Before Grain. I just bought the 1.1 pound bag to test it. We have not opened it yet because I am concerned that there is not much info on the nutrients for the kibble. Plus on the bag it says that there is 108 calories per 8 oz cup and 409 calories per pound (doesn't that seem low and odd) then when you go to the website it says ther is 409 calories per cup. So I am going to assume it is the higher, since that makes more sense and they have an error on the bag. I have sent them an email to get the nutrient stats like phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, etc...as well as the ash content.
As for the wet we use Wellness no grain varieties. My girls love it!!
Any thoughts on the nutrition level of the kibble? Once I get the stats I will post them.
Thanks, Nicole, Chloe, and Callie

My neighbor tried a sample bag of dry for her dog & so far so good. No stomach problems even during the switch. She's thinking of trying the cat dry also.

Before Grain is aware of the misprints on their bags with the calories bing incorrect.
Still waiting on a nutrient list though.

All 3 of my cats love the BG chicken kibble, so I did confirm with Merrick that the website info is correct and the bags are not correct (being reprinted).

Hi all First post here, In searching for more info on the Merrick B.G. cat food I've found this forum. I recently adopted a young adult cat from my local humane society and was given a supply of Science diet adult dry food, I used it so as not to be wasteful but my kitty also had thrown up several times since i have taken him home. I have some experience dogsitting for a friend whose dog was very sensitive to grain based foods and had been involved with some conversation on the subject which made me think that trying a non-grain food for my new kitty would be a good move. When i went to the pet store to get more food i found the B.G. food and decided to give the small 1 pound bag a shot, My store carries all 3 varieties of their dry food and I've opted for the #3 Tuna flavor. It sure smells more appealing than the Science Diet , that is it smells like it has real food in it at least. The first feeding i mixed the BG with what was left of the science diet and he ate it without complaint, no puking!! He's now only eating the B.G. and i honestly think it has changed his behavior somewhat, He seems less zoomy and has been hanging out with us humans and sleeping more. For now he seems to like it and I'll continue to update as we jump into our first big bag of the stuff. As I said I was looking for some clinical/veterinary expert reviews of this food but could not find any easily so if anyone has a link i'd appreciate it.

I was beginning to think not many use or know of Before Grain. So excited to see posts. A rep for Before Grain will be at my local pet store this weekend. I have their as fed analysis, it is attached. All I am concerned about is the moisture on this ad fed test is only 3.65 but the Guaranteed Analysis says 11%. Is the GA just an average? The calories are off on the tested sample as well. Just makes me nervous to switch. It is between Artemis Maximal Cat and Before Grain. They are the only 2 grain free that I have found that has lower calories. Anyone worried about the high phosphorus in Before Grain? Is 1.4 high? I gave my cats a taste of the food from the small bag, but no switch yet.

Nick - ck out the thread for Solid Gold Indigo Moon dry. No grain and one of my always chubby cats slowly lost weight and has been doing well for about 9 months on it. If you are looking for moist, ck out Weruva thread - it's complete nourishment unlike BG which is only good for supplimental feeding. Solid Gold Blended Tuna is also good for occassional feeding - but not daily. Both of these PFIs have not had problems reported over the past year. Welcome to itch and good luck!

Thanks MaineMom,
I got two free cans of the BG wet....did not win my cats over. I knew it was just meat and in reality my Chloe will not eat just a piece of chicken so I knew she wouldn't like the wet. It was very watery too - yuck!
They are eating Wellness Grain Free right now. I well check out the wet you mentioned. The Indago one, isn't there veggie oil in that? I heard a lot of kitties had potty issues with that. Fish oil is easier to go through the system? I really do not know...I will check that brand out again. They only get 1/4 dry anyway in the afternoon while I am gone, but we are watching calories. I think the one you mentioned was in the low 400 so that is good.
Thanks again.

Hi nic - You can check out all ingredients in Solid Gold foods at solidgoldhealth.com. Stores that sell their dry food should have samples to try if any of the oils (canola, sesame, etc.) are an issue for your cats. Most of the "safe/good" brands list their ingredients on their web sites. It's really hard since last year to find commercial foods a cat likes that are also safe to feed. And every cat has different tastes and needs.
