Yesterday Baby pooped on my floor (i have been laying plastic drop cloths & newspapers down where she goes) today she peed. She seems really picky about her litter box 2 days after fresh litter and she's back to going on the floor. God forbid one of my other cats use her litter box! I use baking soda also, but she doesn't always use it, and i use tidy cats which has a pleasant smell to it mix it with Johnny cat.she does not like the tidy cat by itself she will not use it.I'm really tired  Angry  of cleaning up her pee & poop. I have changed litter boxes the one that was provided with her when I got her had a bad urine oder but it did have a hood which this one doesn't.I can't afford to take her to the Vet to have her checked out at this time.Any suggestions on what I can do? Thank you have a Blessed day akm3

You could try Cat Attract litter to draw her to the litter box, and also using an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle to clean up her messes. Even if you can't smell the pee after cleaning it up, there's still a residue that the cats can smell, and then they will just use that spot again. Orange peels can also work on those spots. Frankly it sounds like she just doesn't like the Tidy Cats litter. It may feel icky to her paws, or have too strong an odor. I'd try changing the litter gradually to an unscented litter. You may also just need more litter boxes - she may feel pressured by the other cats when she goes to use the box. There are an awful lot of things that can lead to going outside the box, including serious health issues, but I understand the need to rule out behavioral problems before spending the money on a vet.

I have 3 cats & 4 litter boxes 1 for each cat plus an extra. 2 of them are smaller boxes 1 in the bedroom 2 in my hall & baby's in my bathroom. Rusty is larger than Baby & uses the one in the bedroom. baby she does use Rusty's my other main coon cat, Baby is a main coon also & I have mama she's a tortie and she is small so size of box is not an issue for her.I just, this last litter change decided to try the tidy cats mixed with johnny cat but it isn't helping. I will use johnny cat for now & check into the Cat Attract litter & Nature's Miracle asap are these sold at pet stores or can I get them at a department store ?

akm3,

The following works for me pretty well.  If not already doing so, I would suggest you scoop poops out of boxes at least twice a day and completely change the litter, wash out the most often used boxes, and put in new litter every 2 to 3 days if not using clumping litter. With 16 cats, I change the favorite, heavily used boxes every 2 days. My cats' favorite litters are Jonny Cat and TidyCats. I wonder if baby does not like the baking soda? My cats do not like boxes with lids on them. Can't say I blame them. The ammonia smell must be awful in there.

They sell Nature's Miracle and Cat Attract at Petco and Petsmart in my area.

Sorry to hear you are having this problem!  I agree it's most likely to be the addition of the Tidy Cat litter.

Nature's Miracle is pretty widely available; I've even seen it in some big supermarkets.  You will most likely need to go to a pet supply store for the Cat Attract.  My recommendation would actually be to add the attractant used in the Cat Attract to the litter Baby prefers.  It's made of herbs, and it's called Precious Cat Ultra Litter Attractant.  It has worked well for me.

You may also want to try getting a covered box for her, since that's what she was used to in the past.  She may feel too exposed in the open box.

Trying different litters would be my suggestion, as well.  I really liked Nature's Miracle, it's very light and has a nice scent (and didn't set off my allergies), but choose to use World's Best (both are corn based) because it tracks less.  Swheat Scoop was really liked by my cat, but my male pees heavily and it wasn't up to monster clumps.   Wink

All 3 are available at Petsmart.

I have to agree, go back to the litter & box style she likes. Also 2nd the use of an enzyme cleaner wherever Baby has gone & when cleaning the litterbox. The addition of 3 new boxes [1 covered & 2 VERY large corner ones by Natures miracle] helped get Oreo to stop using the upstairs rug & basement floor. Mine like Tidy cat, sweat scoop, & A&H & worlds best corn litters. Their favorite is feline pine, but they will use the box with it mixed into the others. The pine doesn't clump well & tracks everywhere if by itself.

Thank you all for your suggestions so here's what i thought I would do.
Ok so i called around gtg to Petco tomorrow get the Cat Attract litter & the Natures miracle.Target has a litter box called Boots & Barkley with hood, removable odor door & filter anyone have this litter box? What are your experiences with it? Also then I would have a 3rd Jumbo litter box.Hopefully one of these will be the answer.I was thinking of trying the litter box first & seeing how that works.IF it works i can always return the litter.not that i mind buying the litter but my income is limited and if I don't need to shell out $20 every month for 14 lbs of litter that would be great & the cost for gas is over $3 a gallon here! Shocked Thanks again Love & Blessings to you all for sharing your experiences with me & my kitties akm3

I vote to try the Cat Attract litter, too!  And if it works, but you find it too expensive long term, you can start adding in little by little an UNSCENTED litter - scented litters can really put a cat off, big time.

Remember, what seems a "light, pleasant" scent to you can be overwhelming to a cat - their sense of smell is FOURTEEN TIMES better than yours!

And as always, keep that box scooped and as clean as possible at all times - nobody likes to pee in a filthy toilet.

On the Dr. Elsey's site there is a form you can print up to get the purchase price back for the litter.  It is good for any of the Dr. Elsey's litters, even the Cat Attract.

Sounds like the Cat Attract litter is the uh, way to go. My cats don't like anything with too strong a scent, either.

Thank you all so much for your replies, suggestions etc. we love you all for your support.I just went in to bathroom,Baby, mama & Rusty followed. Baby went over to the New litter box looked around smelled it & i told her good girl & pet her & she got in.Scratched the litter and went Pee  Grin I am using the johnny cat litter at this time so ill see, prayerfully she will continue to use new box with lid.Looks like it could just be she needs the privacy. I can relate to that as i used newspapers with plastic under them. So to see how/if it effected me I put a newspaper with pic of a person there.I couldn't go pee & had to cover up the pic, so this was my little test.Just thought this might help someone else down the line. L<3ve& Blessings to you all! Smiley  Grin akm3

I'm glad to hear baby was a good girl for you Smiley  Some cats just need more privacy than others.

Hoping that privacy is all Baby needed to do her business and will continue to use the new covered box for you.
