California-Yolo county-http://www.yolocounty.org/Index.aspx?page=1135Yolo County Animal Services 2640 E Gibson Road Woodland, CA (530) 668-5287 http://www.dailydemocrat.com/news/ci_14741137Daily Democrat-March 23, 2010 "Pet food and supplies are being provided by the Yolo County Animal Control in an effort to help keep people and their families together.
"Announced Tuesday by Yolo Sheriff' Ed Prieto the program is called "Mouse's Food Pantry."
"The purpose of "Mouse's Food Pantry" is to help those who don't have enough money for food or supplies for their pets.
"Fletcher reported the only requirement for pet owners will be to provide proof of residence within Yolo County. It is preferred that the pet food bank recipient's pets are altered, vaccinated and dogs are licensed.
"For those that are not, Animal Services will provide help and resources to do so.
""Mouse's Food Pantry" is made possible by the pet food donations by local vendors and private donors. Supplies will be available on a first come first serve basis as supplies are made available to the shelter. The amount provided to individuals will be based on the number of pets per household.
""We ask that you limit your visit for this service to one time per month," Fletcher stated. "Businesses or individuals who would like to donate to this cause are welcome to provide dry and or canned cat or dog food, cat litter, rabbit food, treats and toys and any supplies used for the care of pets.
""Mouse's Food Pantry" is located at Yolo County Animal Services, 2640 E Gibson Road, Woodland. The hours of operation are Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Saturday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. People are welcome to call the shelter at 668-5287, Ext. 0, during business hours to check on available supplies."

California-Long Beach-http://www.lbrm.org/Long Beach Rescue Mission 1430 Pacific Ave. Long Beach, CA 90813 Phone: (562) 591-1292Note-this is for the homeless only. http://www.gazettes.com/articles/2010/04/16/community_news/doc4bc8b452a138e568136952.txtGazettes.com April 16, 2010 Homeless Population’s Pets Receive Overnight Stay "The issue of homeless people unable to seek services (or using their pets as excuses to not seek services) because they will have no way to care for their animal companions is a very real problem, Lewis added. At Lewis’s request, on March 23, the spcaLA P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village and Education Center in Long Beach donated four pet crates of varying sizes, large bags of dog and cat food, and around 10 blankets to LBRM. The pet supplies are stored at the Rescue Mission’s Samaritan House shelter for men at 1335 Pacific Ave. Providing housing for pets of the homeless population is an innovative idea and can pose risks at other area shelters because of the potential liability and the lack of space in facilities, Lewis said. Many organizations struggle to maintain the services they offer for homeless men, women and children, yet alone accommodate four-legged companions. "There are two types of homeless people who have pets,” Lewis said. “The first is those who just became homeless and might have to turn their pet in to an (animal) shelter or to a neighbor. The other group is the chronic homeless. To them, their pet is their only friend or their last friend. It’s the only thing that they can trust, and it follows the concept of people picking up fellow strays.” "Before the crates arrived, Lewis said homeless people would visit Samaritan House for lunches or dinners and secure their pets with leashes or ropes in the facility’s outdoor courtyard. Now pets can remain safe in crates while their owners eat meals or spend the night at the LBRM’s emergency shelters."“We’ve got the informal go-ahead from the city to fence and pave the lot (next to the Samaritan House) and we can incorporate a kennel in the lot,” Lewis said. “As soon as we got the crates, we had an immediate need for them, although there aren’t a large number of homeless people around with pets.” "Madeline Bernstein, president of spcaLA, said last month was the first time the spcaLA has donated crates to an organization serving the homeless population. Bernstein agreed with Lewis’s observation that homeless individuals will not seek shelter or services if they have to leave their pets behind.“"A homeless person would rather die than be parted from their pet,” Bernstein said. “It’s an intense bond. I think that the homeless should be allowed to have a pet as long as it’s well cared for. From what I’ve observed, pets often look like they are in better shape than (their owners).” "Jennifer Booker, co-founder of Long Beach-based Pink Kitty Radio, is one of the organizers for a donation drive and fundraiser for the homeless of Long Beach, called “Buddy’s Day.” Starting at 7 p.m. tonight, Monday, donations of clothing, hygiene items, non-perishable food, blankets and pet supplies will be collected at Hamburger Mary’s Long Beach, 740 E. Broadway.
“"Summer is coming and people are used to having creature comforts like air conditioning,” Booker said. “It inspired us wanting to gather as many supplies as we could … for pets, leashes, flea and tick collars, and dry food would help. Anything we have left over is going to the (Long Beach Multi Service Center), a shelter with a daycare program.”"
