Pet Pantry Program
A Program to help feed Truckee-Tahoe’s animals in need.
The economy has been affecting dogs, cats and people these past few months and HSTT is doing something about it. Recently some animals have been turned in for financial reasons. We would much rather have our friends in good homes so we are helping out with the Pet Pantry. This program collects pet food around our area and distributes it to needy pets.

If you have some extra food or want to donate some, our barrels are available at these locations; Mickey’s Pet Stop, Pet Station, Scraps Dog Bakery and Tails by the Lake. Support these businesses and drop and extra can of food in the barrel while you are there.

If you are in need of pet food please contact HSTT at 530.587.5948, and we will set you up with whatever you need. This community has been very generous, and we appreciate it.

We are trying to help those with furry companions that may find it difficult this season to feed their companions. We contacted several shelters (people shelters) and food pantries and surprisingly found that they do have a need for pet food and supplies.

If you would like to help us help a less fortunate family this holiday season to care for their furry four legged friend please donate any kind of dog/cat food, cat litter, pet beds, leashes, etc. to our front desk.

We will be distributing our collection to food pantries and shelters throughout the Chico area the week of Christmas.

Please help us help the less fortunate this season and donate today.

Marin Independent Journal November 27, 2009

"I quickly learned that the SHARE program provides assistance to low-income seniors in Marin County to aid in keeping them with their best friends - their companion animals. Assistance is offered by way of pet food, veterinary care and home visits.

"I joined the MHS as the community programs coordinator last November, and soon became part of an incredible community of people and companion animals. The holidays were right around the corner and I was immediately thrown into the wonderful chaos of our annual holiday pet food drive, where the county's exceedingly generous community donates small bags of cat and dog food, canned food and toys to distribute to SHARE clients. Last year, in addition to our clients, MHS began distributing donations to several shelters and food banks such as the Salvation Army and Ritter House. In the midst of the economic downturn these food banks were experiencing more than 30 percent increase in people needing assistance, many of whom have beloved companion animals."

http://www.marinhumanesociety.org/programsservices/share.html

SHARE consists of several programs that provide a variety of services with the common goal of keeping good friends – people and companion animals – together. The love, support and companionship pets have to offer are invaluable, not to mention the medical findings that prove they are good for us, especially to someone who is ill or isolated. SHARE's services help people who have a great respect and love for animals maintain a special bond with pets. SHARE does this by:

Providing pet care assistance to low-income seniors, persons living with HIV/AIDS and those receiving hospice services
(Side-by-Side)

Note: the SHARE Side-by-Side program provides assistance to Marin County residents who are low-income seniors, living with HIV/AIDS, or receiving hospice care.

Collecting pet food donations to be distributed to persons in need
(Pet Meals on Wheels)

In the Pet Meals on Wheels program, volunteers deliver pet food to clients of the Side-by-Side program and other needy individuals. Donations of pet food are accepted at any time to support this vital part of the program.

When we get pet food or litter donated to us - we are happy to distribute it to low-income families with pets in our area. We recently received a donation of food which was distributed in the following way:

a family in Pasadena on assistance that feeds a colony in their apt. complex (we have TnR'd all the girls and have 2 boys left to trap)

another family on assistance with 2 adults received some of the Science Diet food

a woman on disability received food and litter for her cats! (4 adults)
