Industry condemns cruelty in latest HSUS video
(MEATPOULTRY.com, June 25, 2008)
by Bryan Salvage

"SCHAUMBURG, ILL. ? After new footage was released depicting improper handling of cattle at a Portales, N.M., livestock auction, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Meat Institute condemned the cruelty in separate messages and issued a call for stricter adherence to humane animal-handling guidelines and standards.

The abuse was shown in another undercover video released June 25 by the Humane Society of the United States which included cows being repeatedly shocked with electric prods and dragged by chains while alive. AVMA. labeled this treatment as "inhumane" and "unacceptable." The video, taped in May 2008 at the Portales Livestock Auction, was shot by an HSUS undercover employee working on behalf of the organization.

"The food-animal production system failed these animals," said Dr. Ron DeHaven, chief executive officer of the AVMA. "Everyone involved in animal agriculture, whether on farms or in processing facilities, shares an ethical responsibility to protect the health and welfare of animals used for food production.".....

Meat plants need video monitoring: A.H.A. fellow
(MEATPOULTRY.com, April 21, 2008)
by Bryan Salvage

WASHINGTON ? Dr. John J. McGlone, an American Humane Association fellow, testified on April 17 at a congressional hearing about the benefits of an independent, third-party, nonprofit organization monitoring live video feeds of animal-processing facilities to reduce instances of inhumane treatment.

A professor and institutional official for Animal and Food Sciences at Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas, Mr. McGlone, was invited to testify before a hearing of the U.S. House of Representatives' Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee on the topic After the Beef Recall: Exploring Greater Transparency in the Meat Industry. He also said he believes the current system of oversight has reduced risk, but it is far from eliminating the risk of inhumane treatment or issues of food safety.
......
"Something must be done to restore consumer confidence through greater confidential transparency and oversight," he added. "Video surveillance has the potential to be a reasonably inexpensive way of providing the technical aspects of oversight...."

I agree, something must be done!  This cruelty is much too common.
